Step beyond the reach of standard tourist corridors into raw, unscripted expedition ground. Designed in the pure spirit of early desert patrols and Long Range Desert Group tradecraft, this self-reliant 4×4 traverse cuts through the High Atlas, tracks along the Jebel Bani ridge, and pushes deep into the Erg Chegaga dune sea.
Operating under specialized regional and military permits to access restricted border sectors, this is an exercise in genuine expedition leadership. You won’t be following a blue dot on a digital dashboard. Across the featureless expanse of dry lakebeds and sand seas, you will put pure dead reckoning navigation to the test—plotting bearings, managing headings, and reading terrain by eye.
Led by veteran military instructors, the focus is strictly on solid fieldcraft: convoy discipline, technical off-road driving, sand recovery, and practical bush mechanics when trail-side fixes are the only option. By day, navigate rocky canyon passes and ancient petroglyph sites. By night, establish remote wild bivouacs under vast, unpolluted desert stars, working as a unified crew to operate safely in extreme environments.
EXPEDITION TRADECRAFT & HIGHLIGHTS
* Dead Reckoning & Plotting: Master bare-bones desert navigation, bearing holds, and terrain interpretation without reliance on satellite screens.
* Bush Mechanics & Trail Recovery: Hands-on vehicle recovery, sand clearance, winch ops, and real-world mechanical improvisation in isolated terrain.
* Restricted Sector Access: Traverse controlled military zones, dry lakebeds, and remote oasis’s under specialized permits.
* Wild Bivouacs Under Vast Stars: Pitch wild camps, manage crew resources, and operate fully off-grid across shifting terrain.
EXPEDITION ITINERARY (8 DAYS / 6 FIELD DAYS)
Day 1: Assembly, Fleet Allocation & High Atlas Transit
* Route: Marrakesh to Aït Benhaddou / Ouarzazate Transit Hub
* Distance: ~190 km (Asphalt mountain pass)
* Terrain: Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, winding mountain tarmac, gravel trailheads.
* Details: Arrive in Marrakesh, complete fleet safety checks across our 5-vehicle convoy, and load gear. We mount up and push south through the High Atlas mountains over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Evening briefing covers convoy comms, emergency protocols, and chart plotting for the days ahead.
* Night: Staging Camp / Traditional Fortified Kasbah Perimeter.
Day 2: Anti-Atlas Passes & Desert Staging
* Route: Ouarzazate to Foum Zguid
* Distance: ~185 km (Paved road transitioning to rough piste)
* Terrain: Arid foothills, stone plains (reg), and desert approaches.
* Details: Drive south along the Jebel Bani ridge, visiting ancient petroglyphs and historic trail markers. Clear military checkpoints outside Foum Zguid, deflate tyres, complete fluid checks, and prep vehicles for off-grid operations.
* Night: Remote Wild Bivouac in the Foum Zguid sector.
Day 3: Lac Iriqui Basin & Dead Reckoning Navigation
* Route: Foum Zguid through Lac Iriqui to Dune Edge
* Distance: ~95 km (Pure off-road: gravel, dry lakebeds, soft sand approaches)
* Terrain: Corrugated tracks, wide featureless dry lakebed, sand approaches.
* Details: Screens off. Hand over navigation to the crew to run bare-bones dead reckoning, plotting bearings and calculating speed-time-distance across the dried lakebed of Lac Iriqui. Focus on convoy discipline and reading ground features by eye.
* Night: Wild Bivouac on the Lac Iriqui / Dune Perimeter under vast desert stars.
Day 4: Erg Chegaga Dune Sea & Technical Recovery
* Route: Northern Dunes through Erg Chegaga Core
* Distance: ~65 km (Low speed / high technical driving & recovery)
* Terrain: Deep shifting sand, dune fields, soft basins.
* Details: Technical dune driving through Erg Chegaga. Full practical sessions on heavy vehicle recovery, sand board placement, winching ops, and managing tyre pressures in high heat.
* Night: Wild Bivouac deep in the heart of the Erg Chegaga Dune Sea.
Day 5: Riverbed Corridors, Bush Mechanics & Jebel Bani Border Trail
* Route: Erg Chegaga to M’hamid El Ghizlane & Akka Corridor
* Distance: ~180 km (Sand tracks, wadis, and southern border piste)
* Terrain: Shifting sand tracks, rocky dried riverbeds (wadis), and gravel pistes.
* Details: Morning session on trail-side repairs and bush mechanics—dealing with punctures, fluid leaks, and field improvisations in isolated terrain. Navigate technical wadi riverbeds out of the dunes toward M’hamid, then track west along the isolated southern border perimeter.
* Night: Wild Oasis Bivouac along the Jebel Bani ridge.
Day 6: Prehistoric Rock Art & Akka Valley Traverse
* Route: Akka Oasis through Oum el Aleg to Tata Sector
* Distance: ~110 km (Desert pistes, rocky canyons, stone tracks)
* Terrain: Remote desert trails, rocky canyons, stone tracks.
* Details: Explore remote prehistoric rock art at Oum el Aleg and navigate the Jebel Bani passes. Put final navigation and vehicle handling skills into practice across varied terrain before heading toward our staging point for the return leg.
* Night: Final Wild Bivouac under desert skies in the Tata sector.
Day 7: Re-Inflation & Northbound High Atlas Transit
* Route: Tata / Ouarzazate back through High Atlas to Marrakesh
* Distance: ~290 km (Regional highway & mountain tarmac)
* Terrain: Desert highway and mountain passes.
* Details: Re-inflate tyres, clear final military checkpoints, and begin the long convoy run back north across the High Atlas mountains to Marrakesh.
* Night: End of exped meal in Marrakesh.
Day 8: Fleet Handover & Departure
* Details: Post-expedition debrief, equipment hand-in, and client departures from Marrakesh.
